‘Penetration, masturbation, ejaculation!’ – Lessons learned from facilitating sexual pleasure workshops with self-defining women in England

‘Penetration, masturbation, ejaculation!’ – Lessons learned from facilitating sexual pleasure workshops with self-defining women in England

This seminar will critically explore my own experience of delivering sexual pleasure workshops to self-defining women in different locations in the North of England. Drawing on six workshops hosted over the last three years. I will reflect on the international and UK context regarding women’s sexual pleasure and workshops of this type and the current sociocultural landscape that has supported this initiative. I will also share some of the activities we have facilitated in the workshops and the lessons learned from the women who have participated to date. This is an exploratory interactive based seminar session that will complement work in progress - namely, the development of a commentary for journal publication, regarding the experience and understandings derived from our practice.

About the presenter:

Rachael Eastham is a Research Associate in the Division of Health Research at Lancaster University. She primarily does qualitative research and her interests include sexualities, gender and sexual health, including sexual pleasure. Rachael specifically values the use of feminist and creative methods in research, particularly visual methods; and historical approaches including the use of life histories and archival research.

Before Rachael returned to University as a mature student, she worked in practice with young people and women in sexual health and support settings which inspired, in part, the focus of her doctoral research – women’s life histories of contraception use. Reproductive rights and social justice continue to underpin her current work, most recently a project with LGBTQ+ young people regarding their family relationships and mental health and wellbeing.
