Dr. Mamoun Alazab Awarded JSPS Fellowship from Japan

Our ANU cybercrime Observatory fellow Dr. Mamoun Alazab has been awarded a highly competitive two-year, postdoctoral fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), in association with the Australian Academy of Science, to look at criminal activity in the cyberspace.

The fellowship is Japan’s most prestigious academic award. It provides the recipient with a generous stipend, as well as travel funds to undertake research in Japan. Dr Alazab began his fellowship in July 2015 and is being hosted by Professor Hitoshi Ushijima, Chuo University.

This is a great honour to Dr Alazab and a major acknowledgement of the quality of research in cyber security to conduct collaborative research activities with leading research groups at Japanese universities, research institutions and government bodies including the National Police Agency (NPA) of Japan.

"I am honoured and very excited to receive this level of recognition and also the prestigious fellowship," Dr Alazab said. “This award came at the right time for me and is a great opportunity to develop my research and research network in Japan. This will be my first research visit to Japan. I'm looking forward to continuing my research in collaboration with one of the most recognised scientists and to engage in new research in Japan."

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) was established in 1932 with the purpose of contributing to the advancement of science in all fields. JSPS plays a pivotal role in the administration of a wide spectrum of Japan's scientific and academic programs. JSPS is funded by the Japanese government and has a budget in excess of ¥305.3 billion distributed across a range of different programmes.
