Did you know that ANU has Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) located in 36 buildings across campus in easily accessible locations for staff, students and the public in the event of an emergency? 

As part of the University's first aid policy, ANU has been building up the number of portable AEDs to help ensure the safety of everyone who comes onto campus.

Signage has also been improved to help people find the nearest unit in an emergency.

"With the number of people using the campus on busy days exceeding the tens of thousands, it's important that we get the word out about these important devices and where they are located," said Executive Director of Administration and Planning, Chris Grange.

"AEDs can save lives."

The portable electronic devices can automatically assess the condition of a person's heart in the event of an apparent heart attack and administer an electric shock if needed.

ANU has defibrillators placed in locations that ensure one is within 150 metres of any building.

According to St Johns Ambulance, without early defibrillation using an AED, less than five per cent of cardiac victims survive. The chance of survival is boosted to more than 70 per cent if a victim is administered defibrillation within minutes of having a heart attack.

Trained first aid officers are situated across each of the University's 130 buildings. Security staff also have first aid training.

Staff and students are being encouraged to locate their nearest defibrillator within the buildings they use. The locations of the portable defibrillators are outlined on a map listed on the ANU website or via the ANUOK app. Download the app via the iTunes store or the Google Play store.
