Quality guru mounts a complex argument - Dr Claire Donovan

Quality guru mounts a complex argument - Dr Claire Donovan
Thursday 21 October 2010

On the eve of leaving Australia to take up a reader position at London's Brunel University, Dr Claire Donovan spoke at an Australian National University seminar about the Research Quality Framework (RQF) successor, Excellence in Reseach for Australia.

The broader purpose of the ERA had been subordinated to the available metrics, she argued.

"Instead of bibliometrics or tracking academics communicating with each other, impact looks at the public value of research, not just the economic value but also the social, cultural, environmental value.

"In countries with huge budget cutbacks, it is important for universities to show what they contribute more broadly."

The approach Dr Donovan advocates includes a small but vital role for metrics, evaluation of context statements and case studies, and the use of end-user testimony if required.
