10 years of global drug policy: What have we learnt and where are we heading?

Highlights from the March 2019 UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs

Join us for the first event of the 2019 Canberra Drug Policy Series where Australian drug policy experts who participated in the 62nd session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs and its Ministerial Segment will present highlights and share reflections from the session and what it could mean for Canberra.

In 2009, United Nations member states set a target ‘to eliminate or reduce significantly and measurably’ the illicit cultivation, production, trafficking and use of internationally controlled substances by 2019. Informing the Commission on Narcotics and its Ministerial Segment held in Vienna 14-22 March 2019, to “take stock” of the progress made and to delineate the global drug strategy for the next decade.

The event will host a luncheon where Australian drug policy experts will discuss:

  • Were the 2009 targets achieved?
  • What changes were made over the past 10 years?
  • What is the vision for the future?
  • And what does this mean for Australia and Canberra?

The event will focus specifically on public health, law reform, human rights and civil society.
