Welcome to the School of Sociology

Welcome to the School of Sociology title

Sociology is about understanding the big social issues facing our times, from the changing nature of work and inequality to the climate crisis and its social impacts on urban and rural environments, and new ways of understanding our bodies and identities through innovations in science and technology.

Our School of Sociology at the ANU is world-class, ranking #1 in Australia and #19 in the world in 2024.

We are home to the nation’s first sociology department, established in 1950 and continuing until today.

We have an exciting program of research and teaching that combines the theoretical and applied dimensions of the discipline.

Our major areas of research & teaching are:

  • Economy, Inequality & Resistance (EIR)
  • Embodiment, Gender & Health (EGH)
  • Environment, Nature & Society (ENS)
  • Technology, Media & Infrastructures (TMI)
