LEADERSHIP FOR CHANGE: A LIFETIME OF LOOKING AFTER THE NEEDS OF THE MARGINALISED WITH DR CLARA TUCK MENG SOO AND ISABEL MUDFORD

You might recognise Dr Clara Tuck Meng Soo from when she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, which she gave back in 2021 in protest of Margret Court being recognised with a Companion of the Order of Australia, one of the country’s highest civilian honours, but did you know that Dr Clara Tuck Meng Soo has a long history of providing accessible healthcare to some of the most marginalised populations in Canberra?

She has worked with LGBTQAI* communities, patients with drug dependencies, refugees and recent migrants, patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and patients living with HIV/AIDS.
Join us on 16 March to hear from Dr Clara Tuck Meng Soo and Isabel Mudford discuss Leadership for change – a lifetime of looking after the needs of the marginalised.
She Leads In-Conversation events aim to provide the community with the opportunity to hear from women leaders from different backgrounds and industries, in a conversational format, followed by a live Q&A session and networking. Men are actively welcomed to attend.

In Conversation with Dr Soo and Isabel Mudford will be at the Cultural Centre Kambri (ANU Building 153), University Ave, Acton ACT 2601 on 16 March 2020 from 6pm to 8pm.
The cost is $30 for YWCA Canberra members and Australian National University students and $45 for non-members.

Dr Clara Tuck Meng Soo (she/her) is a GP whose practice is grounded in her values. For her work as a medical practitioner with the Canberra community, Dr Soo received the OAM in 2016 which she has recently returned in protest of tennis player Margaret Court being made a Companion to the Order of Australia, despite having made homophobic and transphobic comments publicly.
Dr Soo has a long history of providing accessible healthcare to some of the most marginalised populations in Canberra. She has worked with LGBTQAI* communities, patients with drug dependencies, refugees and recent migrants, patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and patients living with HIV/AIDS.
Dr Soo started her process of gender transition in November 2017 and transitioned socially and professionally in April 2018.
Dr Soo was born in Malaysia and completed her medical education at the UK’s Cambridge University and Kings College Hospital in London before embarking on her journey to becoming a GP. Since 1993, Dr Clara Tuck Meng Soo has been working as a GP in Canberra. She is the Practice Principal of the Hobart Place General Practice and East Canberra General Practice.

Isabel Mudford (she/her) is a queer policy specialist with significant experience in social inclusion programs, social research, and law reform in the ACT.  
As Chair of the LGBTIQ+ Ministerial Advisory Council, Isabel advised on the development of the Capital of Equality Strategy and First Action Plan including the recent prohibition of conversion practices.  
Currently undertaking a PhD in critical public health at the ANU, Isabel is analysing the evolution and impact of the category of ‘LGBTIQ health’ and its relationship to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  
Isabel now advises the ACT Greens in social inclusion policy, including LGBTIQA+ affairs.
