Congratulations to student prize winners

The school congratulates recipients of the George Zubrzycki and Joan Stanford prizes.

The George Zubrzycki prize is awarded for the best result in Sociology Honours. The 2017 prize was jointly awarded to Fiona Navilly and Jessie Liu. Jessie’s honours thesis examined the complex illegal economy in of ‘naked loan selfies’ in China. Fiona’s honours thesis analysed and challenged the meanings attached to ageing in contemporary society. Professor Jerzy (George) Zubrzycki (1920-2009) was founder of the ANU Department of Sociology, recognised for his eminent contribution to sociology, public policy and the advancement of multiculturalism in Australia.

The Joan Stanford Prize was established in 2007 to honour the late Joan Stanford. The Prize is awarded at undergraduate or postgraduate levels for students studying sociology. In 2017 the prize was awarded to Emma Liyanarachchi. Her honours thesis explored veganism as a form of ethical consumption.
