The School of Sociology is pleased to announce that Professor Celia Roberts has been appointed Head of the School, commencing 1 July 2026. Celia is a leading scholar of gender and the social studies of science and technology who joined ANU in 2018. Her research spans embodiment, health, reproduction, and biotechnology, and she has a strong record of international leadership in these fields. 

The School would like to warmly thank Associate Professor Gavin Smith for his highly valued contributions in his three years as Head of School – his steady, collaborative leadership has strengthened the School's research and education activities, and he was also responsible for guiding the School through a highly successful external review in 2024.
