The impact of bonuses paid to top managers in the resources sector

Seminar 8: 28 April 2014 - Room 2175, Level 2, Haydon-Allen Building, The Australian National University

Emeritus Professor Andrew Hopkins and Dr Sarah Maslen, School of Sociology, Research School of Social Sciences, The Australian National University

CEOs of major resource companies are paid bonuses several times the value of their salaries. The purpose is to encourage them to act with shareholder’s interests at heart. The seminar will examine the nature of these bonus, long term and short term, and identify what it is that CEOs are being incentivised to do. We are particularly interested in the effect of bonuses on the safety of workers. Our data is drawn from interviews with top managers in a number of global resource sector companies. The project is in part funded by the Energy Pipelines Cooperative Research Centre.
