Seminar: "Tales from the archives: the Australian Data Archive and the use of secondary data in Australian social research"

To be held in the Larry Saha Room (HA2175) of the Haydon-Allen building, ANU.  Dr. Steven McEachern, Deputy Director, Australian Data Archive will present a seminar titled "Tales from the archives: the Australian Data Archive and the use of secondary data in Australian social research".

This seminar will provide an introduction to the Australian Data Archive (ADA), focussing on the role of secondary data analysis in the conduct of social science research in Australia. The seminar will provide an overview of the core activities and holdings of the data archive, focussing on the six thematic sub-archives that form the new ADA - Indigenous; Qualitative; Historical; Longitudinal; International, and the existing Social Science collection. The presentation will look at a sample of content from each of the subarchives, exploring the use of content from the archive in recent research in sociology, political science and labour economics. The presentation will then conclude with a review of future plans for the data archive, and discussion of the potential for the integration of secondary data from holdings such as ADA with new advances in high performance for providing new avenues for research.
