Project Aims

This project has four broad aims:

  1. To understand the meaning bereaved mothers attribute to lactation, breastmilk, and breastmilk donation, and how decisions about lactation and donation may influence women’s grief and motherhood experiences.
  2. To examine perinatal and lactation healthcare provider’s policies and practices around lactation care and milk donation for women who experience infant death.
  3. To add new knowledge to the fields of reproductive tissue donation, sociological understandings of motherhood and grief and loss.
  4. To improve care delivery in Australia’s maternity, bereavement and milk banking services.
